Information Literacy Courses for CUHK Students: September - November 2008

The University Library will offer intensive courses from September to November 2008 to assist students in preparing for the Information Literacy Section of the Student IT Proficiency Test. The course provides not only an overview of the Web-based Information Literacy Tutorial, but also includes exercises and practices in

(1) formulating search strategies,
(2) finding information using the Library Catalogue, research databases and the Internet, and
(3) evaluating information sources.

Ten three-hour identical sessions are scheduled as follows:

Information Security Courses for CUHK Students: March 2008 - June 2008

The 2-hour course helps students preparing Section 7 - Information Security of the IT Proficiency Test. Topics include:
1. Fundamental Concepts (Information Security Services, Threats to Information Security, Information Security Measures)
2. Information Security Issues in Daily Computer and Internet Usage (World Wide Web, Electronic Communication: Email, Newsgroups, and Online Chats, Operating System, Network Connection)
3. Information Security Software (Antivirus Software, Personal Firewalls, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam)
4. Information Security Policies and Practices (CUHK Information Security Policies, Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), Practices for Safe Computing, Physical Security)

Eighteen two-hour identical sessions are scheduled as follows:

Ethics in IT Courses for CUHK Students: April 2008 - June 2008

The 2-hour course helps students preparing Section 6 - Ethics in IT of the IT Proficiency Test. Topics include:
1. Importance of Ethics in IT (Appreciate the importance of ethics, Understand the need of ethics in IT is imminent, Identify the source of ethics and regulations of IT)
2. Intellectual Properties (Appreciate the importance of intellectual properties, Understand the general rights and responsibilities of intellectual property owners)
3. Copyright (Understand how copyright protection can be obtained, Understand the scope and duration of copyright protection, Knowledge of consequence of infringing other's copyright, Be familiar with the recent copyleft movement)
4. Trademark and Passing-Off (Understand how trademark and passing-off protection can be obtained, Understand the scope and duration of trademark and passing-off protection, Be aware of the consequence of infringing other's trademark and passing-off, Domain name)
5. Database (Source of database protection, Understand what can be done with other's database)
6. Freedom of Speech (Source of the right, Understand the limitation of freedom of speech, Understand the basic meaning of defamation, Be aware of the possibility and consequence of breaching the Societies Ordinance, Be aware of the different legislations related to pornography)
7. Personal Data Privacy (Appreciate the possibility of breaching the Personal Data Privacy Ordinance unconsciously, Understand the data protection principles, Understand the exemptions, Be aware of the consequence of breaching the Personal Data Privacy Ordinance)
8. Spam (Appreciate why spam is unwelcome, Appreciate the possibility of becoming a source of spam unconsciously, Understand the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance)
9. Computer Crimes (Understand the definition of computer crimes, Be aware of the legislations related to computer crimes)
10. Software and Network Security (Appreciate the importance of software and network security, Understand the nature of virus, zombie, spyware, Trojan horse, and denial of service)
11. Information Technology Regulations at CUHK (Access To ITSCNet Facilities, User Rights and Responsibilities, ITSCNet Staff Rights and Responsibilities, Proper Use, Copyrights And Licenses, Procedures to Handle Violations of Policies and Guidelines)
